Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation of Oxalic Acid

Oxidation of oxalic acid was carried out in a four-neck glass reactor operated at atmospheric pressure. Most of the experiments were performed using Pt/Al2O3 and ceria promoted Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The catalysts were prepared by excess solution impregnation (ESI) method. Catalysts supported on alumina with different Pt loadings (0.2 to 0.7 wt %) and different ceria contents (2 to 15 wt %) were prepared. The surface morphology of the prepared catalysts was investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyzer. Their phases were analyzed with powder X-ray diffraction. In addition to these the characterization was enriched by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), nitrogen adsorption, chemisorptions and thermo-gravimetric (TGA) analysis. Non-catalytic and catalytic wet air oxidation of oxalic acid using ZnO, CeO2, Al2O3, Pt/Al2O3 and ceria promoted Pt/Al2O3 was carried out. The degradation of oxalic acid obtained by CWAO was found to be much higher as compared to non-catalytic oxidation. The various parameters such as size of the catalyst particle, air flow rate and agitation speed, catalyst dosage and loading, initial concentration of oxalic acid were studied.

Felsic is a term used in geology to refer to silicate minerals, magma, and rocks which are enriched in the lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium. The term combines the words "feldspar" and "silica." Felsic minerals are usually light in color and have specific gravities less than 3. Common felsic minerals include quartz, muscovite, orthoclase, and the sodium-rich plagioclase feldspars. The most common felsic rock is granite. On the opposite side of the rock spectrum are the iron and magnesium-rich mafic and ultramafic minerals and rocks. In modern usage, the term acid rock, although sometimes used as a synonym, refers to a high silica content (greater than 63% SiO2 by weight) volcanic rock such as rhyolite. The term was used more broadly in older geologic literature. It is considered archaic as the terms acidic and basic rock were based on an incorrect idea dating from the 1800s that silicic acid was the chief form of silicon occurring in rocks. To achieve such an objective, chemical analyses of water in conjunction with geomorphic, geologic and hydrogeologic evidence are used.

In the present investigation,the physico-chemical parameters of high sulphur North-east Indian coals, the problem of acid mine draiange (AMD) formation in the mining sites and remediation options have been reported. These coals are charaterized by low ash, high volatile, sulphur and friability. AMD produced in these areas releases highly acidic effluents enriched with metal contents. Acidic mine waters was found to be reddish brown to yellow in colour due to the presence of Fe and Al sulphate salts respectively. The Cr, Cu, Cd, and Pb found in soil and sediments were bio-available. Micro- encapsulation studies with phosphates has showed inhibition of pyrite oxidation. A Sequential Alkalinity Producing (SAP) process containing chemical and bio-chemical methods has been developed for treatment of AMD. A site specific Environmental Management Plan has also been reported.
