The strange tale of a boy named Flea starts in Rye, NY. It was all very normal. But soon his parents divorced and his mother Patricia remarried a jazz musician. Flea´s stepfather frequently invited musicians to his house for jam sessions which sparked Flea´s interest in music. The family moved to Los Angeles, where Flea became fascinated with the trumpet, idolizing musicians like Miles, Dizzy, and Louis. But the family soon fell apart, ´´I was raised in a very violent, alcoholic household,´´ Flea later said. ´´I grew up being terrified of my parents, particularly my father figures. It caused [me] a lot of trouble later in life.´´ He began smoking weed at 13, and became a daily user of harder drugs. He was on the streets by 14 and soon after, met another social outcast and drug user named Anthony Kiedis. They form a band that would become the Red Hot Chili Peppers. ACID FOR THE CHILDREN is pure, uncut Flea, with nothing left unsaid.
The once beautiful earth is now nearly dead. No winds blow - the weather never changes. Filling every valley and all the low lands, acidic clouds the color of cinnamon lay heavy as they have for the past 50 years. Where the red cloud meets the mountains is known as redline; nothing lives below redline. Without protective clothing and breathable air you will quickly die below redline. Only a few merchants and traders scavenge below redline. Because of the deadly atmosphere, people now call the Earth: ACID. The remains of mankind live in cities clinging to the highest mountain peaks. These cities provide meager residence. Travel is limited to dangerous hydrogen filled airships. The world has changed but men´s lust for pleasure has not. Preying on isolated pockets of humanity are pirates who deal in human slavery for pleasure. Twenty-four year old Noah Palatin has sworn revenge against the pirates who murdered his father and commandeered his father´s unique airship. His quest brings him in league with new found friends who become his family. Together they battle their way through adventures and strike a blow against the sex pirates. Unexpectedly, his adventure takes him into his heart as well. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Curtis Klinger. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/036297/bk_acx0_036297_sample.mp3. In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the 20th century´s most notorious criminals and life as one of his ´girls´. At age 14, Dianne Lake - with little more than a note in her pocket from her hippie parents granting her permission to leave them - became one of ´Charlie´s girls´, a devoted acolyte of cult leader Charles Manson. Over the course of two years, the impressionable teenager endured manipulation, psychological control, and physical abuse as the harsh realities and looming darkness of Charles Manson´s true nature revealed itself. From Spahn ranch and the group acid trips to the Beatles´ White Album and Manson´s dangerous messiah complex, Dianne tells the riveting story of the group´s descent into madness as she lived it. Though she never participated in any of the group´s gruesome crimes and was purposely insulated from them, Dianne was arrested with the rest of the Manson Family and eventually learned enough to join the prosecution´s case against them. With the help of good Samaritans, including the cop who first arrested her and later adopted her, the courageous young woman eventually found redemption and grew up to lead an ordinary life. While much has been written about Charles Manson, this riveting account from an actual Family member is a chilling portrait that re-creates in vivid detail one of the most horrifying and fascinating chapters in modern American history. 1. This is a frank, intelligent, and deeply moving debut memoir. With the precociousness expected of the only child of a doctor and a classical musician - from the time he could get his toddler tongue to pronounce deoxyribonucleic acid, or recite a French poem - Marco Roth was able to share his parents’ New York, a world centered around house concerts, a private library of literary classics, and dinner discussions of the latest advances in medicine. That world ended when his father started to suffer the worst effects of the AIDS virus that had infected him in the early 1980s. What this family could not talk about for years came to dominate the lives of its surviving members, often in unexpected ways. The Scientists is a story of how we first learn from our parents and how we then learn to see them as separate individuals; it’s a story of how growing up quickly can slow us down when it comes to knowing about our desires and other people’s. A memoir of parents and children in the tradition of Edmund Gosse, Henry Adams, and J. R. Ackerley, The Scientists grapples with a troubled intellectual and emotional inheritance in a style that is both elegiac and defiant. Marco Roth was raised amid the vanished liberal culture of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. After studying comparative literature at Columbia and Yale, he helped found the magazine n+1 in 2004. Recipient of the 2011 Shattuck Prize for literary criticism, he lives in Philadelphia. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Goldstrom.
