The characters in this extraordinary book are often - on the surface - depraved, vicious, cowardly and manipulative, but their essential humanity is never undermined. Two professors of philosophy turn pugilists; Leith removal men become the objects of desire for Hollywood goddesses; God turns Boab Coyle into a house-fly; and in the novella, ´A Smart C**t´, the drug-addled young hero spins off on a collision course with his past. The Acid House is a bizarre, disturbing and hilarious collection from one of the most uncompromising and original writers around. House is the first descendant of disco. While Black and Hispanic communities were jamming and party DJs spinning records, a new birth of rhythm gave way to music lovers from Chicago and New York in the form known as house music. Developed in Chicago´s underground dance club culture in the early 1980s, house music began as DJs spinning in the gay subculture altered the pop-like disco dance tracks to give them a more mechanical beat and deeper bass lines. As well, these DJs began to mix synth pop, dub reggae, rap, and even jazz into their tracks. The first pioneers of house music were Chicago DJ and record producer Frankie Knuckles, Chicago acid-house electronic music group Phuture, Tennessee DJ and producer Mr. Fingers, and US-born, UK-based singer Kym Mazelle. House music quickly spread to other American cities such as Detroit, New York City, Baltimore, and Newark - all of which developed their own regional house scenes. Today, house music is worldwide and continues to dominate most club scenes and has expanded beyond its subculture beginning. 1. Language: English. Narrator: David Sadzin. In this extraordinary collection of stories, the world-wide best-selling author of Evening Class once again reveals her incomparable understanding of matters of the heart. In The Return Journey, Maeve Binchy creates powerful, compelling stories of love, loss, revelation, and reconciliation. A secretary´s silent passion for her boss meets the acid test on a business trip; a man and a woman´s mutual disdain at first sight shows how deceptive appearances can be; an insecure wife clings to the illusion of order, only to discover chaos at the hands of a house-sitter who opens the wrong doors; a pair of star-crossed travellers pick up each other´s bags, and then learn when you unlock a stranger´s suitcase, you enter a stranger´s life. These and many more poignant, ironic, often humorous stories, unforgettable slices of life, make up The Return Journey, a spellbinding trip into the human heart. 1. Language: English. ´We´re in the back of a car belonging to the men our mothers told us to never get in the back of a car of. I close my eyes and wonder how many girls will come to my funeral.´ Vincent Patrick Duffy has already checked out. Trapped between Skintown´s narrow horizons, he chops ribs and chickens in a takeaway, dreaming of escape, joint after freshly rolled joint. A mindless act of kindness leads to the unlikeliest of business opportunities. Where the government has failed, might the second summer of love and a little pill with a dove on it be the broom to sweep away the hatred and replace it with love, so much love? Skintown is Vinny´s drink- and drug-fuelled odyssey through fighting, fishing, rioting, romance, reconciliation and acid house. Bristling with a restless energy and drunk on black humour, this superb debut is a wild ride. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Ciaran McMenamin. What happened to Generation X? Millenials dominate our Facebook feeds and people bang on about the baby boomers - but what about us? The lost generation, the middle youth, the middle child of today. Are we still cool? Generation X? Remember them? The kids who believed they´d never grow up. The generation Douglas Coupland immortalised in his novel of the same name. The wry, knowing navel-gazers obsessed with cool and being cool who today are sandwiched between the boomers of the 60s and the millennials. Gen X´ers came of age against a backdrop of Britpop and the Spice Girls, Tarantino and Pulp Fiction, Madchester and the Stone Roses, acid house and rave, super clubs, Ministry and Cream. They holidayed in Ibiza high on hooch and E and never ever believed there´d be a comedown. So whatever happened to them? We turned 40. And as Tiffanie Darke points out in this witty exploration of the generation who defied generalisation, we´re not handling it all that well.... Where once we wore floaty skirts and Doc Martins, now we´re sporting Scandi fashion and ´interesting´ trainers. We still party in Ibiza but now bodyboard in Cornwall. Where once mixtapes were the ultimate mating call, now we take selfies and swap Spotify playlists - all the while conspicuously wearing large Dr Beats headphones and casually leaving old packets of Kingsize Rizla lying round our open plan kitchens. More to the point, Gen X are now in charge. In government, in business and the creative industries. The most anti-establishment of generations has now become the establishment. But as tech overtakes the arts as society´s great shaping force, Tiffanie ponders - does cool and its pursuit still matter? If Gen X had it sorted, gave us Barack Obama and downward facing dogs, why is stress the new flu? Why are we working not for love anymore - or cool - but to avoid negative equity and depleting pension pots? In Now We Are 40, Tiffanie... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tiffanie Darke. 2003, Singapore. Friendless and fatherless, 16-year-old Szu lives in the shadow of her mother, Amisa, once a beautiful actress and now a hack medium performing séances with her sister in a rusty house. When Szu meets the privileged, acid-tongued Circe, an unlikely encounter develops into an intense friendship and offers Szu a means of escape from her mother´s alarming solitariness. Seventeen years later, Circe is struggling through a divorce in fraught and ever-changing Singapore when a project comes up at work: a remake of the cult ´70s horror film series Ponti, the very project that defined Amisa´s short-lived film career. Suddenly Circe is knocked off balance: by memories of the two women she once knew, by guilt and by a past that threatens her conscience. Told from the perspectives of all three women, Ponti is about friendship and memory, about the things we do when we´re on the cusp of adulthood that haunt us years later. Beautifully written by debut author Sharlene Teo, and enormously atmospheric, Ponti marks the launch of an exciting new literary voice in the vein of Zadie Smith. 1. Language: English. The Duke of Rockliffe is 36 years old, head of his house, and responsible for his young sister, Nell. He is, therefore, under some pressure to choose a suitable bride. Whilst accompanying Nell to what he speedily comes to regard as the house-party from hell, he meets Adeline Kendrick - acid-tongued, no more than passably good-looking yet somehow alluring. Worse still, her relatives are quite deplorable - from a spoiled, ill-natured cousin to a sadistic, manipulative uncle. As a prospective bride, therefore, Adeline is out of the question. Until, that is, a bizarre turn of events cause the Duke to throw caution to the wind and make what his world will call a mésalliance. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Alex Wyndham.
