To determine the effect of salicylic acid on infestation and damage on maize by stem borers, different doses of salicylic acid (0.5 g, 1.0 g, 2.0 g and 4.0 g each in 1.0 L of H2O, 1.0 g in 100L of H2O/ha, 200g in 100L of H2O /ha, 400g in 100L of H2O /ha and 0g of SA as the control) were dissolved in water and sprayed on the leaves of maize plants for five times, at 10-day intervals, starting 10 days after germination until 60 days of the plant growth. The experiment was conducted in both the major and the minor seasons of the year 2009, with a split plot design, with fertilizer and without fertilizer, with four replications. The results indicated that salicylic acid appeared to have no effects on both the stem borer infestations levels and grain yield of the maize. Busseola fusca formed the majority of the stem borer larvae in the maize in both seasons, and the fertilized crops appeared to have attracted more stem borers than the unfertilized crops. This work will help improve the knowledge base in the area of crop protection.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is the fourth most important oil crop in the world. The growing of sunflower is, however, faced with challenges of infestation by disease and infection by pests. Farmers rely heavily on use of broad spectrum pesticides to combat diseases, implying high pesticide bills that sometimes make sunflower farming economically not feasible. It, therefore, becomes imperative to identify varieties that have natural resistance to pathogen infection. Sclerotinia diseases are among the most deleterious diseases of sunflower globally. Oxalic acid is the pathogenicity factor for species such as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. While oxalate oxidase has been shown to confer some resistance to oxalic acid degradation in a number of other oil crop, it is hypothesized that the same can successfully apply for sunflower. This book, therefore, presents a case study where different sunflower varieties are analyzed for their resistance to oxalic acid degradation as well as their oil yield and quality. Identification of resistant and high yielding varieties should go a long way in promotion of economically feasible sunflower farming by stakeholders in the edible-oil industry.

Rhizopertha dominica, the most commonest species, commonly known as lesser grain borer has an important position among the stored grain pests and caused considerable damage to wheat in storage. The losses during storage by the pests are not only in terms of quantity, but also in quality of the food grains. The qualitative losses are attributed to changes in chemical components of grains. It was found that grain with over 0.5% kernel infestation was unfit for milling, and that wheat flour containing over 10 mg uric acid/100 g from insect contamination was unacceptable to consumers. Therefore, investigation carried out on growth and development of Rhizopertha dominica Fabr. on different wheat varieties to find out relative degree of resistance in relation to their physical and chemical traits and to evaluate the efficacy of indigenous plant products as grain protectants.

The present study was carried out on 250 cattle of Palam Valley which were screened for anaemia. Cattle having haemoglobin upto 8g% were considered anaemic and were subdivided into 3 sub groups on basis of severity. The overall incidence of anaemia was recorded to be 60.8%. Maximum incidence was of mineral deficiency(55.2%) and least was of tick infestation(3.2%).Clinico- haematological, mineral, biochemical & therapeutic studies were undertaken in both anaemic and healthy animals. Morphologically, two types of anaemia viz. microcytic hypochromic and normocytic normochromic were noticed in 53.29% and 46.71% anaemic animals respectively. Hypocuprosis was noted in anaemic animals of all the groups and was associated with iron deficiency in only 25 anaemic animals. The blood gas and acid base analysis revealed significantly (P 0.05) lower mean values of blood pH, plasma HCO3A, pO2 and TCO2 indicating severe metabolic acidosis in severely anaemic animals. After instituting the therapies, all the parameters were restored towards normal by day 8 post treatment. Blood transfusion and administration of Ringer s lactate helped to combat acidosis and severe anaemia in 4 out of 8 animals.
