Breeding of Maize for Acid Soil Tolerance

Maize is one of important crops which is utilized in a wide variety of human food, animal feed and raw materials to industrial product around the world. In the tropics, maize is usually planted in acidic soils and it s yield is unsatisfactorily in the soils. Planting maize hybrid varieties tolerant to acid soils along with the use of sustainable agronomic practices offers an effective strategy for improving maize productivity in acidic soils. This book describes the process to produce and select maize hybrids tolerant to acid soils. This book covers the heterosis of single cross hybrids and combining ability of their parental inbred lines evaluated in acidic soils, and heritability estimates from the hybrids populations. This book also covers the use of SSR markers to predict heterosis and hybrid performance. It is hoped that the findings from the study may help maize breeders to produce new hybrid varieties having high yielding potential and tolerant to acid soils.

To determine the effect of salicylic acid on infestation and damage on maize by stem borers, different doses of salicylic acid (0.5 g, 1.0 g, 2.0 g and 4.0 g each in 1.0 L of H2O, 1.0 g in 100L of H2O/ha, 200g in 100L of H2O /ha, 400g in 100L of H2O /ha and 0g of SA as the control) were dissolved in water and sprayed on the leaves of maize plants for five times, at 10-day intervals, starting 10 days after germination until 60 days of the plant growth. The experiment was conducted in both the major and the minor seasons of the year 2009, with a split plot design, with fertilizer and without fertilizer, with four replications. The results indicated that salicylic acid appeared to have no effects on both the stem borer infestations levels and grain yield of the maize. Busseola fusca formed the majority of the stem borer larvae in the maize in both seasons, and the fertilized crops appeared to have attracted more stem borers than the unfertilized crops. This work will help improve the knowledge base in the area of crop protection.

Heat stress due to high air temperature is one of serious threats to maize production and it will increase due to current climate change predictions. Heat stress when occurring during reproductive stages, sharply decreases grain yield in maize and decreases grain number. The optimum temperature for grain development lie between 27 and 32C, a rise in temperature over the optimal level encourages pollen shedding to start earlier, whereas silking is delayed, therefore increasing the anthesis silking interval (ASI) to the point that silking period no longer coincides with anthesis. Also, rises in temperature reduce pollen viability and silk receptivity that resulting in low grain number per ear and consequently reduce grain yield. Higher level of N availability is associated with more damaging due to high temperature effect. Developing tolerant genotypes to high temperature or practicing some agronomic procedures to overcome heat stress will be necessary. There is no information about using Azospirillum to increase heat stress tolerance in maize. Azospirillum is well known for its ability to excrete phytohormons such as gibberellins, cytokinins, auxins and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA).
